New screening test for genetic disorders

News of the first pregnancy in Europe following a new method of screening which can successfully test for inherited disorders.

Karyomapping is a type of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis which not only checks for inherited disorders but also for common chromosomal disorders at the same time, thus hopefully reducing the risk of miscarriage and ensuring that only healthy embryos are implanted during IVF.

The first pregnancy occurred after treatment at London’s Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health and gives those who are either known carriers of a genetic disorder or already have a child with a disorder the option to protect their future children from debilitating conditions.

Karyomapping is offered to both NHS and private patients at Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health, one of ten centres in the UK offering the technique.
